The Shangri-La Hotel in London, for me, is the best Hotel I’ve ever stayed in.
When you think of London, you recall images of the famous buildings that make up the skyline. The Gherkin, The London Eye, Tower Bridge, etc, but the one that stands out the most is The Shard. Pointing at the sky, into a tight point, it dominates the skyline of London, and is home to the Shangri-La Hotel.
Situated around halfway up the building, and taking up a large number of floors, the Hotel has a mix of facilities, including restaurants, bars, a swimming pool, gym and more. There is everything a guest could possibly want, without setting foot outside the door.
As you enter from street level, you are immediately welcomed by the doormen, whom are wonderful and courteous. They whisk your bags away (if you choose) and direct you towards the main lobby – accessed via a Hotel-guest lift, which takes you right up to the Hotel foyer, some 30 floors up in the sky. As you step out the lift, you get your first glimpse of the London skyline, and it is simply phenomenal. It really is a spectacle that has to be seen to be believed or fully understood. That first viewing is breathtaking, and I was transfixed for a moment.
The staff on the check-in desk were fast and polite, and informed us that our room was not quite ready – something we understood and accepted in advance as we were two hours early. He offered us the chance to move to a room we could have entered immediately, however it wasn’t the type of room we had requested in advance. We chose to hold out and explore London, and return to the pre-allocated room that was specifically chosen for us, as we requested “a bathroom with a view”. We were able to leave our luggage with the staff, and informed it would be waiting in our room once we arrive later that day. Brilliant!
After returning to the Hotel several hours later, we returned to the lobby, and was recognised immediately by a female member of staff, whom greeted us by name. Fabulous! She gathered our room keys, and informed us that we would be more than happy with our room, but if for any reason we were not, to return to the desk and she would change it for a room facing the opposite direction. She then asked a gentleman to show us to the room, and off we went, up to the 45th floor.
As we entered the room, the blinds rose and revealed the breathtaking London skyline – this time, at night! All of the lights of the building twinkled far beneath us, and made for a transfixing sight, We were blown away, to the point we just froze and stared in awe. It was INCREDIBLE.
After a few moments, the member of staff showed us the main features of the room, advised how to use the toilet, shower, TV, etc etc, and bid us goodbye and a fantastic stay.
We then found the most perfect surprise in the room – a very special little cake for our anniversary. We were truly touched at the gesture, and found it to be incredibly special for us. It was a rather tasty mousse desert, in the shape of a heart, with two forks. It also came with a very nice postcard with a lovely little message, something we chose to keep and bring home.
The bathroom was AMAZING, and had a view that overlooked St Pauls Cathedral, as well as a wider area of London. I cannot begin to describe just how perfect the bathroom was. The bath faced the floor to ceiling windows, and the view was phenomenal. We had purchased some Lush bath bombs to have a truly relaxing bathe during our stay, and I am so glad I did. I spent two hours in the bath, and loved every moment.
There is a TV in the mirror in the bathroom, so I had some Christmas music playing, and was in a very happy, festive place!
The bed itself was MASSIVE. I didn’t even know my partner was in the same bed, we were that far apart. Brilliant! Not only this, but it was the softest bed I’ve ever slept in, with the BEST view, one I won’t ever forget.
The room was large and spacious, with a seat by the window, a huge TV, plentiful storage space, as well as a large Desk next to the window, with all the stationery you could require, and a pair of binoculars to look out over the city. It also had a little visual guide of the sights you could spot, if you looked hard enough!
We visited the pool, on the 52nd floor and it was FANTASTIC. Something I’ll never be able to fully put into words, it was that good. There is something magical about swimming at that height, up the tallest building in London, whilst overlooking the city. A truly fabulous feeling. There was plenty of seating around the pool too, with access to a bar menu, if required.
The gym looked plentiful in terms of machines, though this wasn’t something we made use of during our visit.
Breakfast in the Ting restaurant was buffet style, though NOT as you’d expect. It was an opulent affair, with a wide range of food available, from English to Oriental. The staff were more than happy to cook you something specific, if you required it too. They were incredibly courteous when it came to service, topping up the Tea and juices on our table.
I had a selection of Sausage, Egg, Bacon, Toast, Yogurt and a few other things, all whilst overlooking London – this time in the light. It really is a wonderful sight to see the city starting to come alive, all whilst looking down from above.
Checkout was quick and painless, and we left our luggage once again with concierge, whilst we went to explore the city, before enjoying a west end show in the afternoon. When we arrived back in the evening to pick the bags up, they were waiting for us on the street level desk, meaning we didn’t have to go all the way up, to come all the way down. That said, it wouldn’t have bothered me in the slightest, as to get just one more slice of the Shangri-La Hotel would have been more than welcome!
Our visit has opened our eyes up to the luxury Hotel market in London, and we will definitely be returning this year (2019), as we have decided to stay at the hotel once a year. We have never experienced such a fantastic stay anywhere else, and as we love the city of London, we feel it’s worth every last penny to spend in such a fantastic, opulent, and special Hotel.
Shangri-La London, as one of the business cards in the stationery set says, “Shangri-La, My London Residence”.
