Tasty food, but disappointing service
A tasty, late breakfast, marred by poor service.
Waking up in Manchester after a weekend break, we were on the lookout for an establishment that served a decent breakfast. After some searching online, we found Alabama’s All American Eatery, and headed a short distance on foot.
At 11:15 on a Sunday morning, there was a small queue outside the door of a rather unassuming building. From the exterior, there isn’t a lot to see, and if you didn’t know what it was, you’d walk on by without a second glance. The queue moved slowly, and eventually we entered the door, only to be mt with a small staircase with a little more waiting. Not an issue, however, as we were given a menu to peruse during our wait.
In total we waited 20-25 minutes to get seated. We were informed to head to the till point when we had decided what we wanted to eat to place our order, located at the back of the establishment, near to the open kitchen-come-bar area.
The menu is full of choices, including an American take on the standard breakfast items – full English, fry-ups, alongside Waffles & Pancakes with a plethora of toppings to suit everyone. In addition, there are a wide range of drinks, including alcohol and milkshakes. We each settled for a different breakfast option, placed our order, and returned to the table.
And then we wait.
This was the most disappointing part of the entire experience. There was so much waiting. From the queue outside, followed by the queue inside, and then the wait once you place your order, a large part of the meal is spent doing nothing. This usually wouldn’t be too much of an issue, as you expect to wait wherever you eat out, but when you look at the prices of the menu, I feel as though this shouldn’t be the case here.
Our drinks arrived after 15 or so minutes, which meant by the time the actual breakfast itself arrived, those of us with hot drinks now had either finished them, or they were cold. Not ideal. I was not confident that a second order for more drinks would arrive before the main meal, so refrained from doing so.
The food itself, though, was really rather enjoyable. I opted for a pancake stack with Banoffee topping, and it was divine. The addition of the crunchy nuts on top (which can be removed if required) made for a very enjoyable and alternative breakfast. There was plenty of syrup and bananas, with a sprinkling of blueberries and a mound of cream on top. It was incredibly tasty, warm, and exactly what I expected it to be, if not slightly larger. In actual fact, as the menu has no images, you’re somewhat unaware of the exact portion sizes in advance, so when this large bowl arrived, I was surprised, and knew exactly I couldn’t eat it all, no matter how tasty it was.
The rest of our party also enjoyed their meals, and we agreed that the lack of prompt service detracted from the otherwise lovely food. It tarred the entire experience, which is disappointing, especially when the food is on point, as it was.
All in all, I would consider returning if I saw no queue outside, however, I wouldn’t return as late in the morning . The food is tasty and the price reflects this. Just don’t expect to eat and leave in a short amount of time, as you’ll be left waiting.
